Experiencing Copenhagen

The exciting Tivoli Gardens isn’t just a pleasure garden; it’s also a famous amusement park. Although the space is adorned with beds filled with over 400,000 colorful flowers (including those signature tulips) and tall, majestic fountains, the rides are the main attraction. The Mountain Coaster and the Demon roller coasters are two big thrillers, along with the Vertigo giant swing and the Golden Tower drop.

Near Tivoli Gardens is the National Museum of Denmark, which documents the entire history of the Danes. Gorgeous exhibits take visitors right from the Danish Middle Ages and Renaissance to the modern day, and there are treasures from the Royal Collection, as well as Classical and Near Eastern antiquities.

For those who would rather spend the day people watching and soaking up the Copenhagen culture, the area known as Nyhavn along the canals is the place to be. Locals and tourists alike buy beer from the kiosks and spend leisurely afternoons hanging out along this scenic stretch.

The Arts

With the country’s beautiful surroundings, it’s not hard to see why the Danes are such inspired people. Galleries and exhibition spaces are scattered all over Copenhagen, and visitors can easily get stuck into the arts scene. One of the major stops is the stunning Danish National Gallery, where masterpieces by Picasso, Leger and Matisse are all on display. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is home to a number of classical statues and sculptures, and the winter garden in the grounds is a great place to relax in the middle of a cultural hotspot.

Proffering a chance to mix things up a bit, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art features contemporary Scandinavian pieces and an always-interesting rolling calendar of temporary exhibits. Alternatively, some locals consider the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art to be the best museum in town thanks to its unique architecture, Sculpture Park and spectacular setting on the coast of the Øresund Sound.

Nightlife

In Copenhagen, the nightlife doesn’t get started until after midnight. Once again, Nyhavn is a great place to explore, although it is liable to get very busy – the side streets provide some eclectic venues off the beaten track. Vesterbro and the Meatpacking District are similarly fun spots for revelers.

Live music is big in Copenhagen, and many venues double up as nightclubs. Copenhagen Jazzhouse is home to fun, sophisticated jazz evenings, while The Rock is where to head to experience the local rock and heavy metal scene. The area of Norrebro has a quieter vibe, with places like Rust hosting mainstream music, and Global appealing to a worldwide audience.

The clubbing scene is brilliant, with many places not closing until five AM. On Sundays, Rub’a’Dub is where to find dance hall/reggae fun, or there is always Elektronisk Tirsdag for edgy electronica.
