Traditional Munich In Bogenhausen, a quiet neighborhood in northeast Munich, is the lovely English Garden. One of the world’s largest urban parks, this space is home to a 78-mile-long network of trails used by cyclists, joggers and walkers. There is also a Japanese teahouse on an artificial island in the Schwabinger stream, where traditional ceremonies are performed. This gorgeous park is also home to several excellent beer gardens, including the second largest in the city; another can be found on Kleinhesseloher Lake. For something quieter, visitors can head over to the Asamkirche, a small 18th Century church officially known as St Johann Nepomuk Kirche. The interior is filled with stunning baroque design, including red stucco and gilded woodwork. Within walking distance from here is the open-air Victuals Market, a genuine treat for the senses. There are stalls selling fresh fruit and veggies, authentic Bavarian Schweinshaxe’n, seafood, European cheeses, honey products and sushi. This is also a great place to pick up the perfect souvenir – there are stands selling homemade straw puppets. Museums Munich is replete with excellent museums, and some of the world’s most impressive collections are housed here. One important place to check out is the Deutsches Museum, the world’s largest museum of science and technology with over 28,000 objects on display. Exhibits cover varying fields such as aerospace, astronomy, agriculture, computers, navigation, mining and even music. Those hoping to get more familiar with Bavarian culture can head to the Valentin-Karlstadt-Museum, which is housed inside a 14th Century tower and dedicated to Karl Valentin, Charlie Chaplin, and Liesl Karlstadt. And, of course, every visit to Munich should include a stop at the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum, for a slice of history and to sample some choice ale. Nightlife Some of the best nightlife in Germany can be found in Ludwigsvorstadt, a district located around the heart of this metropolis. This place is teeming with bars, pubs, and clubs all centered on the beautiful Gärtnerplatz. Linked to this area is the neighborhood of Isarvorstadt, a focal point for the gay and lesbian community. Hotels, hostels, diners, casinos and more give this part of town a quick pulse and a reputation for some of the best entertainment in Munich. For a more relaxed nightlife setting, explorers can seek out cafes or the pub-restaurants known as Wirtshäuser; Spatenhaus an der Oper is well-known for its amazing Wiener Schnitzel!
