Milan’s most prominent attraction is the Duomo di Milano, a Gothic masterpiece that took nearly 500 years to complete. Located in Milan’s main square, its construction began in 1386 under the Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, and it remains a truly breathtaking example of European architecture. Tourists can take a guided tour, wander on their own or pitch up in time for the frequent cultural events.

The Duomo di Milano is near Porta Vittoria, a famous district where the city gate and the Spanish walls once stood. In the center of the Piazza Cinque Giornate stands the magnificent obelisk, designed by Guiseppe Grandi to commemorate the 1848 uprising against Austrian rule.

Milan is the home of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper, now exhibited in the refectory of the Santa Maria dell Grazie church – no art lover can visit this city without making sure to go and take in its spectacular beauty.

Milan is widely known as a brilliant city for shopping, with everything from designer boutiques and giant retail outlets to funky indie stores. The main retail area is the Fashion Quadrangle, a set of neoclassical blocks between Duomo Square, Cavour Square and San Babila Square. The fabulously cool Montenapoleone Street, Della Spiga Street and Porta Venezia are where to find some of the most prestigious boutiques and showrooms.

For true fashionistas, the Armani Megastore is a must-visit. Giorgio Armani’s flagship store in Milan, this temple to high fashion covers over 8,000 square feet, and stocks creations from the Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans lines, among plentiful others. The Gucci flagship store is close by, offering another generous helping of haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessories.

Things to do

This popular metropolis is much more than just a tourist destination; explorers can find more authentic venues and experiences if they dig a little deeper. In terms of dining, Dal Bolognese on Piazza della Repubblica is a prime example of the glamorous side to Milanese life, while restaurants such as Il Salumaio di Montenapoleone demonstrate the vibrant, gregarious pace of Italian life. There are cafes on every corner and nightlife to suit every type of traveler.

Watching a football match featuring AC Milan or FC Internazionale at the famous Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is a truly Italian experience, and the patriotism and chaos of the crowd is a real sight to behold. Alternatively, the Exhibition Fairs held year-round across the city provide a quieter afternoon filled with new discoveries of everything from wines to computers.

Finally, climbing to the top of Branca Tower, a 108-metre structure built in 1933 by Gio Ponti on Camoens Street, is a marvelous way to check out views of this glorious town.
