As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, this is considered an essential passage for those who are able to make the journey. It is forbidden for non-Muslims to enter this city. The Hajj Dressed in white Ihram clothing, pilgrims gather at the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime religious rite. It is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds a black stone structure called the Kaaba, considered the holiest site in Islam. Features of note include the King Fahd Gate and the ancient Zamzam well where the water is believed to be sanctified by God. Apart from the Masjid al-Haram, essential stops during the Hajj are made at Mina, known as the ‘Tent City’, Mount Arafat, Muzdalifah and Ramy al-Jamarat. Some continue to Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (the Mosque of the Prophet) in Medina, the location of Muhammad’s tomb, but this further journey is optional. General Sightseeing Besides the components of the pilgrimage, there are many other points of interest and family activities to enjoy in and around Mecca. Camel rides are a popular pastime at Mount Arafat and there are various caves in the mountains where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have spent time in prayer. Another place worth visiting in Jeddah, not far outside Mecca, is the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at the Khuzam Palace. A swimming pool, restaurant, park and mosque can also be found here. While there is an abundance of ancient architecture to admire, the Abraj Al Bait Towers – also known as the Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower – is a modern marvel within the city. This complex incorporates the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, which is also the third tallest in the world, as well as the world’s highest clock tower and largest clock face. The massive structure was built as part of the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Project and overlooks the Grand Mosque. The five-star Fairmont Hotel is inside. Shopping and Eating Mecca has many shopping malls plus traditional markets where gifts and souvenirs can be purchased – both international brands and local-themed items such as perfume oils and prayer mats are available. The Abraj Al Bait Towers houses more than 4,000 shops, a food court and numerous restaurants.
