Exploring the Temples Bangkok is full of temples – Wat Yan Nawa is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Its unique chedi and viharn, built later during the rule of King Rama III, are in the shape of an ancient Chinese ship and make for a stunning photo opportunity. Near Wat Yan Nawa is Wat Arun, one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. Also called the ‘Temple of Dawn’, it sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and has exquisite towers covered in Chinese ceramics. The characteristic temple spires were constructed in the 19th Century while King Rama II was in power. Adjacent to the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, which houses the biggest reclining Buddha statue in Thailand. The statue is covered in gold and its feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Other Things to Do While in Bangkok, visitors must be sure to sample some of the delectable local cuisine. The food from street vendors is extremely cheap and offers a huge variety.
